Netball (girls) – SSV State Finals

Congratulations to the girls netball team on winning the SSV State Final last Friday. That’s now two years in a row for the team! They dominated their three round-robin games, defeating Mercy Regional College (28–16), Mill Park SC (48–6), and Williamstown HS (46–14). Finishing as top team in their pool, they came up against Berwick SC in the semi-final. After an even first half, the BSSC girls ran away in the second half to win 23–13.

This put them into the final against Mercy Regional College again, who had defeated traditional netball powerhouses, Maribyrnong Sports Academy, in their semi-final. Our girls got away to a great start, leading 6–1 early in the game, but MRC fought back to level the scores approaching quarter time. From then on, BSSC gradually pulled away and ran out comfortable 30–15 winners, defending the title they won in 2015. Well done to Abbey Ryan, Keely Wilson, Kelsey Ralph, Keisha Tonzing, Georgia Miller, Milly Wicks, Emily Cossar, Kate Salvador, Elley Lawton, Danielle Markwell, coach Jayden Cowling, team manager Nicola McIvor, and scorer Baylee Yanner.

Their opponents in the second game, Williamstown High, proved too strong and defeated the BSSC girls 37-25 denying them a spot in the semi-finals. Well done to the team of Alex Strawhorn, Taylor Stibbe, Elisa Pica, Keisha Tonzing, Brooke Mangan, Rachelle Mangan, Lucinda Smythe, Taylah Pointon, Dainah Blow, and coaches Jonathan Goodman and Kevin White.

Netball Victoria School Championships

Our boys and girls netball teams finished their seasons in fine style at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne today. The boys had only one defeat in their five round-robin games to qualify for the semi-finals. The had a comfortable 11-6 win against Luther College in the semis to make it through to the final where they came up against the only team that had beaten them during the day, Christian College Geelong.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t reverse the result and finished with the silver medal – a great result.

The girls followed a similar path, winning all but one of their seven round-robin games. The had to beat the undefeated Maribyrnong College in their last round-robin match to secure a spot in the semi-finals. They played their best netball for the day to run away with a 16-8 victory to qualify for the semis. Their opponents in the semi-final, Geelong Grammar, proved too strong with a 16-7 win, and they ultimately went on to win the competition.

Congratulations to both teams on a very successful year of netball. Well done to Abbey Ryan, Keely Wilson, Kelsey Ralph, Georgia Miller, Milly Wicks, Emily Cossar, Kate Salvador, Elley Lawton, Danielle Markwell, Ava Lowndes, Lachie Ratcliffe, Simon Dundas, Donte Thomas, Tyler McLeod, Mitch Keuken, Cal Draper, Sam Milne, and Keo Payne. Big thanks to coaches Kara Fox and Jayden Cowling, scorers Baylee Yanner and Rohan Fox, and team manager Nicola McIvor.hey couldn’t reverse the result and finished with the silver medal – a great result.

Lacrosse – Senior Secondary Schools Competition

Congratulations to our girls lacrosse team who competed very well at the Senior Secondary Schools Competition in Altona last Monday. The team had been training every Thursday at lunchtime for several weeks, and the hard work paid off with some excellent results at the competition.

The first game was against Mount St Joseph’s, the team that ultimately went on to win the division. The BSSC girls played extremely well in this game which finished in a 0–0 draw. No other team was able to keep Mount St Joseph’s scoreless throughout the day.

The second round was against Mater Christi “C” and once again the game finished in a draw (2–2) with goals to Hayley McNaughton and Alyssa Gilbee.

Mater Christi “D” was the next opponent, with BSSC registering their first win (2–0) for the day, with goals to Hayley McNaughton and Cheyenne Bourne.

Another 0-0 result (thanks to some great goalie work from Jade Sewell) in the last round against Mater Christi “B” qualified the BSSC girls for a play-off for third place. Goals to Alyssa Gilbee, Cheyenne Bourne and Hayley McNaughton in a 3–0 win in the play-off game elevated the girls to third place for the day.

Well done to the team of Cheyenne Bourne, Isabella Clarke, Maddy Davis, Alyssa Gilbee, Hayley McNaughton, Felicity Mountjoy, Sarah Pagram, Jade Sewell, Htoo Gay Ku, Jenny Silverlock, Xiaolan Thornton. A big thank-you to coaches Gino Iuliano and Roy Preece for their commitment to running all the lunchtime training sessions and coaching the team in the competition.

Clay Target Shooting

Congratulations to Lee Vella who competed in the State Final of the School Student Trap Championships at the Bendigo Clay Target Club last Monday. Lee qualified for this event after finishing third in the North East Zone competition back in early August.
