The Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) Senior Football (Soccer) Girls have won their ninth title in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) State Championships.
The last time the Lions claimed the title was in 2012. Previous wins were in 1995, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2010 and 2012.
The Championships took place on Tuesday 8th September at the Darebin International Sports Centre. The matches were two fifteen-minute halves with two pools of four teams being scheduled.
The team took on Bruswick SC and McKinnon SC in the Pool games with Ballarat High School withdrawing from the competition.
Game one had a shaky start with Brunswick finding the back of the net early in the game. The Lions fought hard for the remainder of the game with a late goal in the last minute of the game to manage a 1-1 draw.
Game two saw the team start to gel as one with a strong display of skills and teamwork. The final score was 2-1 against McKinnon. We had to sit and wait for the Brunswick v McKinnon game to be played with reliance on McKinnon being victors. The result went our way with first place in Pool A being secured.
The final was played against Western Heights College, Geelong who finished on top of their pool. The Lions found the back of the net early in the game with a strong attack. The team followed up with a second goal before Western Heights hit back with their first goal. Late in the game the girls secured the title with the third and final goal. The final score being 3-1 in favour of the BSSC Lions which makes them 2026 Senior Girls Soccer SSV State Champions.
A huge congratulations to the team and thank you to Barnaby Seviour for coaching the team.
