2016 Australian Weightlifting Federation Youth Championships

Congratulations to Belle Harwood who won a gold medal in Sydney at the Australian Weightlifting Federation Youth Championships during the recent holidays. Belle competed in the 63 kg category, lifting 65 kg in the snatch and 83 kg in the clean and jerk. She qualified for this event following her success at a State competition in Melbourne earlier this year.

AFL Under 18 National Championships

Congratulations Kobe Mutch and Kane Farrell who were both selected to play in the AFL Under 18 National Championships.

Kobe was a stand-out player for NSW/ACT in the Division 2 competition during May. He was the top possession-getter in the first two rounds, with 32 possessions against Queensland and 29 possessions and a goal against Tasmania. He then picked up 20 possessions and kicked three goals against Northern Territory. His form during the Division 2 competition enabled him to be selected for the Allies team in the Division 1 competition which was conducted throughout June. The Allies team consisted of the best players from each of the teams in the Division 2 competition (NSW, ACT, Tasmania and Northern Territory). Once again, he performed extremely well. He led the possession count in three of his four matches against South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria Country. At the end of the championships, he was rewarded with selection in the Under 18 All-Australian team.

Kane was selected to play for Victoria Country and was a member of the team which went down to Western Australia in the first round. As a bottom-age player, it was a huge achievement for him to be selected in the team.

Well done to Kobe and Kane.

2016 National School Futsal Championships

Congratulations to Jemimah Bish, Georgia Coverdale, Cait Green, Sam Green, Mikayla Kerr, and Aysha McCoy who have all been identified to represent Victoria Country at the 2016 National School Futsal Championships in Brisbane in September. The girls were selected following their success in the Bendigo School Futsal Titles late last term.

Basketball – Sandhurst Division competition

Congratulations to our girls’ basketball team which won its way through to the Loddon Mallee Region finals by winning the Sandhurst Division competition. Our boys’ team missed qualification after finishing second in their competition, but still played some great basketball.

The girls had a tough game against Catholic College Bendigo. The first half was very even, with BSSC going into the half-time break with a slender one point lead. They were a much different team after half-time, combining well to run away with a 20 point victory.

Scores: BSSC 42 defeated CCB 22

Top scorers: Keisha Tonzing 11, Taylor Stibbe 9, Milly Wicks 7

The boys played two games for the day. They had a comfortable win against Castlemaine SC in their first game.

Scores: BSSC 69 defeated Castlemaine 27Top scorers: Brock Harvey 9, Sam Brynhildsen 9, Lachie Ratcliffe 8, Fraser Bell 8

CCB also defeated Castlemaine, so the winner of the competition was decided in the BSSC v CCB game. CCB started strongly and established a significant lead early in the first half, but the BSSC boys pegged the margin back to five points at one stage. Unfortunately they couldn’t maintain the momentum, and CCB ran away with a strong win.

Scores: CCB 48 defeated BSSC 26

Top scorers: Fraser Bell 10, Ben Wickens 5

Cross-country – SSV State Finals

Congratulations to our BSSC cross-country runners who all performed extremely well at the SSV State Cross-Country finals in Bundoora.

Hugh Schaeche was our highest placed individual runner in the 17-20 year age group, finishing 23rd in a field of over 80 runners. This was an outstanding achievement, given this event brings together the best runners from each region of the state. Hugh was only about 30 seconds away from runners who finished in the top ten.

In the 17-20 year age group team event, Jordan Buckell (35th), Jake Hilson (42nd), Reza Azimi (44th), Jake Alcock (63rd), and Nathan James (75th) all ran excellent times and combined to take home the silver medal. Once again, an outstanding achievement at state level.
