AFL – Premier League v Hallam Senior College

Our boys football team emerged victorious in their final Premier League match for the season. Playing against Hallam Senior College, a tough encounter was predicted with the visitors being a game ahead of us on the ladder. In very wet and slippery conditions at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve, the BSSC Lions won every quarter to eventually run away with a 26-point victory.

It was an even first quarter, but better accuracy in front of goal allowed the Lions to establish a 7-point quarter-time lead. Neither team could gain full control of the game in the second quarter and with a goal each BSSC still led by 8 points at half-time.

Hallam had the ball in their forward half for much of the third quarter, but a great defensive effort from our boys restricted the opposition to just 4 points, while we made the most of limited opportunities to kick 1.1. The home team shifted gear in the last quarter keeping Hallam scoreless while adding another 2.3 for an impressive victory.

Netball (girls) – Sandhurst Division

Congratulations to our girls netball team who won the Sandhurst Division competition on Thursday. In their first game against Castlemaine Secondary College, the girls had a comfortable 53 – 0 victory, with coach Jayden Cowling experimenting with a variety of player combinations. The second game against Catholic College Bendigo was more evenly fought. In recent years, these games have been close contests, and early on, everything pointed towards another thrilling encounter. Lots of turnovers were created in the first quarter and scores were locked at 4 – 4 at quarter time. In the second quarter, the BSSC girls managed to maintain possession more consistently and established an 11 – 7 half-time lead.

After the break, the girls played some great netball across the whole court and ran away with the contest in the second half. They won the third quarter 7 – 2, and the final quarter 5 – 1 to eventually run out 23 – 10 winners.

Well done to the team of Emily Cossar, Elley Lawton, Ava Lowndes, Danielle Markwell, Georgia Miller, Abbey Ryan, Kate Salvador, Keisha Tonzing, Milly Wicks, and Keely Wilson. Coach was Jayden Cowling, and umpire Nicola McIvor.

The girls have now qualified for the Loddon Mallee Region finals on Thursday 21 July in Echuca.
