Former Bendigo Senior Secondary student and champion athlete, Madeline Lawson, has claimed the Victorian state pole vault championship.

The 21-year-old, who trains in Adelaide, but represents Box Hill Athletics Club, produced a competition best jump of 3.7 metres to claim the championship on the first weekend of the Athletics Victoria’s open and junior track and field championships.

Lawson’s leap was 10 centimetres above her nearest rival, Kate Abfalter, from Keilor St Bernard’s Athletic Club.

It matched her 3.70m leap at last month’s Athletics SA Invitational meet in Adelaide.

An accomplished long jumper, Lawson at one point held the Athletics Bendigo’s women’s under-16, under-18, under-20 and open records.
