BENDIGO Senior Secondary College’s School Sport Victoria football campaign has come to an end at the hands of Essendon Keilor College.
Essendon Keilor captured its third SSV premier league title in a row with a 32-point victory over BSSC at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Wednesday.
Essendon Keilor won the final 10.4 (64) to 4.8 (32) and will now go on to play in the semi-finals of the Herald Sun Shield.
BSSC led by four points at quarter-time, however, for the rest of the game was forced to play catch-up footy after Essendon Keilor kicked 4.1 to 0.2 to lead by 19 points at the main break.
BSSC fought its way back to within four points late in the third quarter, before a costly turnover deep in defence gifted Essendon Keilor a goal as it took back the momentum, before kicking away in the final term.
BSSC’s best player medal was awarded to ruckman Daniel Keating, while other standouts included rover Seb Spijkerman and wingman Rhys Mutch.
“They were able to break the game open with the first couple of goals of the last quarter, but other than that it was a competitive game of footy,” BSSC coach Rick Coburn said.
“We probably would have had as many, if not more, inside 50s for the game, but we just couldn’t put enough scoreboard pressure on them when we had our chances.
“More than half of today’s side were Year 11 players, so they should be able to have another good tilt at it next year.”
