The college received a fascinating piece of history this week with the donation of a book dating back to the days of the Bendigo Corporate High School in 1894.

The book – a leather-bound edition of poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning – was awarded to Walter DeRavin by the Headmaster J. Glen Oliphant.

It was found recently in the back of a desk drawer, purchased at an Adelaide antique store, before being offered to BSSC to add to our historical archives.

Dr Walter DeRavin was born in central Victoria in 1878 and moved to South Australia in the early 20th century after completing his medical studies. He died at his home in Glenelg in 1941 under tragic circumstances.

Many thanks to Tony Stidwell of Woodend for donating the book to the college. If anyone has more information about Dr DeRavin please contact Old Gold Alumni: holton.john@bssc.edu.au
