The City of Greater Bendigo is calling for young leaders to attend the 2016 Youth Summit.

Mayor Cr Rod Fyffe said the Summit would be an opportunity for young people to come together and discuss the issues that are important to them.

“The Summit is now in its third year and this year it will help inform the development of the City’s next Greater Bendigo Youth Strategy,” Cr Fyffe said.

“We encourage all student leaders and interested young people to come along and take part in discussions, hear from some fantastic guest speakers and meet other young people from across the municipality.

“The Summit enables young people to have their say and raises awareness in the community about what they see as important to their lives.”

Guest speakers this year will be former AFL footballer and founder of mentoring program Outside the Locker Room Jake Edwards and 3BO radio presenter Erin Ryan.

Cr Fyffe said both speakers had interesting and relevant stories to tell.

“Jake Edwards has played AFL football and battled depression and substance abuse, and then went on to found a mentoring program aimed at tackling issues such as suicide, mental health issues and drug abuse in country football clubs across Victoria,” he said.

“Erin Ryan has a successful career in radio, after studying media and communications at university and becoming involved in community radio while studying.

“Both of these people are great role models for young people thinking about their future.”
