James Fearn grew up in Woodend, attending La Trobe University to study Civil Engineering.
Eight years into his career he realised the two aspects he enjoyed most about his work were supporting new graduates and tutoring engineering students at uni.
“I was getting sick of sitting in front of a computer and wanted something more meaningful.”
Returning to La Trobe Uni (online), James studied a Master of Education with maths and physics as his methods and elected to take a ‘fast track’ into his new career—which may be fast but it’s an intense year where participants study and work full-time under a ‘Permission to teach’ program.
As part of this, he had a teaching round placement at BSSC and was impressed with the college and the idea of teaching more senior students.
Now, a few months into his employment here, James is enjoying being part of senior where he teaches Maths and Physics.
He’s found students’ ‘aha’ moment of understanding the most satisfying part of teaching.
“There’s been a lot to take in, but I’ve enjoyed continuing to build my teaching skills and I’ve learnt so much from other staff who have been so helpful.
“I also enjoy building positive connections with students—including taking time to talk about what their aspirations might be.”
When he’s not at work, James enjoys golf, basketball, and walking—he has two dogs so daily walks are part and parcel of life.
Welcome to BSSC, James.
