Today, Maree Edwards, State MP for Bendigo West, cut the ribbon and officially opened BSSC’s refurbished Maths Department.
Students, staff, and those involved in the design and construction of the works gathered in the original quadrangle of G-Block that is now an airy but sheltered space.
As one of the oldest buildings in Bendigo, Heritage Victoria has been integral in ensuring the historical features of G-Block and the ‘vibe’ of the building were not lost in the modernising process.
Gutted and enveloped in scaffolding during the renovations, today was a chance to celebrate a triumph blending heritage features with state-of-the-art contemporary design.
Since completion of the works, the refurbished, high-tech classrooms and offices have proved their value and students have this to say about their new maths classrooms.
“Being in a more comfortable and enjoyable space makes it easier to learn,” says Amy Jefferis. Marcus Baldwin notes, “Having up-to-date high-tech resources—that are more reliable—helps students keep on track better.”
Maree told the group the 10 million dollars funding for the project is part of wider financial support for BSSC by the Victorian Government—a total of almost 19 million dollars since 2015.
We thank Maree for her ongoing and much-appreciated support for our college—a college about which she says, “It is an ambition for many students across Bendigo to attend BSSC as they prepare for their future …”
Given that 50 – 70% of BSSC students study maths—and Bendigo’s population is expected to continue to grow—this wonderfully refurbished building will be well-utilised into the future.
