Year 11 VET Engineering student, Zekai (Zed) Young, gained hands-on industry experience with Yellow Iron Fleet in Big Hill last week, during his Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placement.

Providing heavy equipment and machinery solutions to the mining, civil and construction industries, the company works with a wide range of heavy machinery, including graders, excavators, bulldozers, loaders and dump trucks.

During the placement, Zed helped the team service and prepare a Caterpillar 14 Next Generation grader before it headed out for work at a local goldmine.

The experience exposed him to the many different trades and skills involved in maintaining heavy machinery, with work crossing over into welding, machining, mechanical and auto-electrical areas.

As a VET Engineering student, the placement has given Zed the opportunity to apply a variety of practical skills whilst learning from tradespeople across different areas.

It also provided a great insight into the range of career pathways available within engineering, heavy machinery and the mining industry. Well done Zed!
