During a week of Work Experience at Agnico Eagle in Fosterville, BSSC Year 12 student, Hunter Bacon, gained valuable insight into the servicing requirements of the underground vehicles used at the site.

The VET Automotive student worked with Agnico’s vehicle maintenance team and learnt many new skills whilst on placement.

Hunter assisted with maintenance and repair of the mine’s light vehicles, which are critical for transporting people and equipment safely underground.

Due to the harsh environment, the vehicles are serviced every week to ensure they remain mechanically sound and safe to operate.

Hunter participated in a range of tasks including routine checks, basic servicing and assisting with inspections of brakes, tyres, and suspension.

He also observed more complex repairs and developed an appreciation for the importance of preventative maintenance in a high-risk industry.

This experience provided a clear understanding of how mechanical reliability contributes directly to workplace safety and efficiency, while also giving Hunter the practical exposure to mechanical processes in a professional setting.

Hunter would like to pursue a career in the mining industry, hopefully an apprenticeship in mechanics once he has completed his studies.

“It’s been awesome, there’s always something to do—the servicing of the Hilux and Landcruisers just keeps going,” he says.

“It’s a great place to work and everyone has been really supportive.”
