Year 12, VET Engineering student, Zeke Buttle, recently completed a week of Structured Workplace Learning at DMC Engineering & Hydraulics, where he gained hands-on experience in their specialised engineering workshop.
Focused on hydraulic cylinder repairs, general fitting and turning and welding, Zeke assisted the staff on many tasks, including maintaining the work area, organising tools and materials, observing planning processes, and learning safe work practices.
Zeke also supported basic machining preparation, measuring components, and handling hydraulic hoses, fittings and engineering parts, developing an understanding of how precision engineering contributes to reliable machinery performance across many industries, including mining.
Undertaking practical lathe work, Zeke applied his engineering skills to machine an induction-hardened chrome rod, for use in a hydraulic cylinder.
Under supervision, he contributed to setup procedures, material selection, and the importance of accuracy and surface finish in hydraulic components.
This experience has strengthened Zeke’s understanding of machining processes and the real-world application of engineering skills.
It has also enabled him to build confidence in a workshop environment, teamwork, and communication.
Well done Zeke!
