BSSC Year 12 student, Sam Foster, recently completed a week of Work Experience with McCullochs Hydraulic Engineers in Epsom.
The placement allowed Sam to apply his skills from previous VET Automotive studies, as well as his current Systems Engineering and Metals subjects.
Sam enjoyed the variety of tasks he completed during the week.
He used CAD software to design and produce a deburrer, putting into practice both his drafting abilities and his understanding of engineering.
Sam learned first-hand about hydraulic systems—how components such as pumps, valves, and power units work together to transmit power through fluid, and the importance of proper system assembly and maintenance.
During his time on site, Sam assisted with work on a D9 dozer being modified and custom-fit with a ‘Zero Tension’ fibre-optic cable laying plough kit—a specialist hydraulic installation designed to lay cable without stress to the fibres.
“I’ve really enjoyed my placement and have learnt a lot,” says Sam.
“Being able to be hands-on in different areas, from designing with CAD, to understanding hydraulics, to working on the D9 dozer has confirmed that I want to pursue a career in this field.”
