Over the last two weeks, BSSC students received a powerful message about staying safe on our roads. John Maher shared his family’s story of tragedy and heartache with BSSC students in an effort to make them safer and more conscientious road users.
John spoke from the perspective of a husband, father and grandfather when he talked about two tragic accidents; one which left him with life-long injuries, the other which took the life of his youngest daughter, Carmen.
John’s message is one that every young driver (and passenger) needs to hear. It puts the onus not only on everyone who gets behind the wheel, but on everyone who chooses to get into a car as a passenger.
“You must make wonderful choices,” John told students. “When you get into a car you gift your life to the driver. I urge every one of you to be great drivers on our roads.”
John also encouraged students to share Carmen’s message.
“I can’t give Carmen a cuddle, he said. “I can’t tell her I love her. Go home tonight and hug your mum… hug your dad… tell your family how much you love them, and tell them about Carmen.”
