BSSC was today graced with the presence of an Australian environmental champion.

Andrew Skeoch’s bio describes him as “a naturalist, environmental thinker, educator and one of Australia’s best-known sound recordists.”

Over decades, alongside producing high quality recordings of birdsong—and animals and landscapes—Andrew opened up understanding for thousands of people about the importance and benefits of truly listening to nature.

Anyone who has taken time to appreciate the beauty of Australia’s spring and summer dawn chorus will already have realised there’s a lot more going on than birds just waking themselves up.

Today BSSC students and some staff had the immense privilege of Andrew’s inspiring company including a chance to see and hear some of his compelling spectrograms of birdsong.

His evolving insights into what the songs and calls of birds can tell us about the birds who sing them and the environment in which they live, brought a deeply refreshing approach to the importance of valuing and protecting our feathered friends.

Andrew’s presentation revealed compelling reasons to listen to, observe and protect our incredible natural environment.
