This morning, a very fortunate group of BSSC Year 11 and Year 12 students enjoyed a wonderful encounter with outstanding Australian writer, Cate Kennedy.
Cate received a warm welcome and shared much valuable advice about the art and craft of writing.
She believes when students write expressively and without self-consciousness, they build a confidence that infuses into all their other subjects.
“Writing allows us to build meaning and understanding, to make sense of our lives, to tell our own story and to present ourselves to the world. Being seen and heard is especially valuable for young people on the cusp of adulthood.”
Cate shares the concerns of many writers, readers and booklovers who feel the ability to write in an engaging and compelling way is suffering as we spend more time on screens.
Why does Cate keep writing?
“Because it makes me less alone and more connected to others.”
We look forward to a second workshop with Cate on Tuesday April 1. If you want to build on what you learnt today, or if missed out on this one, get in touch with Lucy Mow.
