Global Politics and Australian Politics students had the opportunity to learn from an Australian diplomat this afternoon when Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Andrew Goledzinowski, visited their classroom.

Mr Goledzinowski, who is in Australia for the Global Heads of Mission Meeting in Canberra, was accompanied by his wife, Lyn Allan, and Manager of Investment & Trade at Regional Development Victoria, Ian Hart.

In a session that included lots of student engagement, Mr Goledzinowski answered questions across a vast range of subject matter that included everything from pathways into careers in Foreign Affairs, to world issues such as the relationship between the USA and China.

He is in Bendigo to visit local businesses and organisations, exploring possible trade and cultural relationships between Malaysia and regional Australia.

Having originally studied Law at the University of NSW, Mr Goledzinowski’s career in Foreign Affairs has taken him to countries as diverse as New Zealand, South Africa, Switzerland and Iraq. He has also been a Senior Advisor to Alexander Downer and former Foreign Minister, Gareth Evans.

He encouraged students to study what they are passionate about.

“There are many pathways to a career in diplomacy,” he said. “It’s a very competitive field and many people apply several times before they are accepted. The most important thing is to have a broad range of interests and passions.”
