Congratulations to BSSC Year 11 student, Bridget Smith, who has been selected for the women’s team representing Australia at the Inline Hockey World Championships in Roana, Italy, in July this year.

“My journey into playing competition inline hockey started 3 years ago after I saw others enjoying it and decided to have a go. I had been playing casual Inline for 10 years,” Bridget said. “I now play in a mixed senior team which has lifted my confidence and changed the dynamic of my game. My favourite position is wing defence, but some people think I am a good shooter.”

Last year Bridget made it into the Victorian State Team that came runners-up in a hard-fought grand-final held in Moe. “Selectors for the Australian team were there to decide who would play overseas for Australia in 2018 and it was so great to be selected.”

“I am a bit nervous about going to Italy, but it will be so exciting. People will be coming from all over the world to this competition so I guess I’ll get to make new friends from many different countries.”

Bridget usually trains three times a week and plays local league every Wednesday at The Zone, as well as state level at varying venues. “I have a goal set up in the carport so I can practice my puck-handling skills at home too.”

Asked about how she managed all this and school, Bridget replied, “It can be hard sometimes, but it’s really good here at BSSC. I have made some new friends and I really like the extra support for homework that students get through the Study Centre.”

Bridget’s Mum is working hard to raise the $6000 this trip will cost.
