Students studying Studio Arts gained first-hand knowledge of curatorship this morning, when they attended exhibitions at the La Trobe Art Institute (LAI) and Bendigo Art Gallery (BAG).
BAG curator, Clare Needham, spoke to students about the ‘Soul Fury’ exhibition currently showing at the gallery and what it takes to bring a large scale exhibition together.
Clare guided students through the installation of a major exhibition, the collaborations involved, and the technical aspects of layout and design, including lighting.
Public Programs Coordinator at LAI, Karen Annett-Thomas, explained the curatorial practices at the institute using the current exhibition, ‘Economies of Scale’, as an example of the experimentation, playfulness, and relationship building with artists that the LAI team employ in their work.
Students then had the opportunity to visit both exhibitions and see the artworks for themselves. They also gained insights into art conservation from BAG Education Officer, Helen Attrill.
Today’s excursion provided vital learning for students’ upcoming SAC.
