Students in Cindy Growcott’s and Sharon Newth’s Year 11 Legal Studies classes had a brush with the law this morning when they joined a live Zoom session with Her Honour Judge Sarah Leighfield of the County Court of Victoria.

Judge Leighfield, who served at the Bar for 12 years before becoming a Magistrate (here in Bendigo) in 2016 and a County Court Judge in 2020, shared her knowledge of the law and her pathway into the legal profession.

It was an incredible opportunity for students to ask questions about their own interests in law to someone at the height of their legal career and see behind the scenes of the Criminal Division of the County Court of Victoria.

Judge Leighfield answered questions on a broad range of subjects including the process of becoming a judge, the rights of victims, accommodations made for vulnerable witnesses, the most difficult and memorable cases she has worked on, and how to separate the stresses of a legal career from her personal life.
