The leadership of BSSC’s student council past president, Gabriela Giggins, and current secretary, Ashley Eadon, was last night recognised through the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award program.

Three girls were shortlisted as finalists for this prestigious international award, with Gabriela named the overall Award winner while Ashley Eadon took out runner-up along with Gabrielle Henthron from CCB.

Kathy Wilton, head judge, said the judges were blown away by Gabriela’s participation in public affairs, her commitment to volunteering, her student and wider leadership achievements and her dedication to empowering her fellow students.

In her acceptance speech Gabriela spoke eloquently about the wonderful opportunities she has had in her life, and she thanked her family for their support. Gabriela is currently working in Lisa Chesters’ office and she is looking forward to learning lots and having many amazing experiences this year.

Through their numerous scholarships Zonta encourages young women to be represented in key decision making positions worldwide by pursuing careers or seeking leadership positions in public policy making, government and volunteer organizations.

Gabriela’s YWPA application will now be forwarded to the Zonta International District 23 for judging at national level, and should she be successful in Australia, she may well become one of the International recipients of the YWPA award with ten awards of US$4000 on offer.
