BASKETBALL – AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The BSSC girls basketball team has returned from a very tiring week in Melbourne at the Australian School Championships. The team performed very well and were unlucky not to come home with a medal. They played six games for the week, winning three and a losing three. Results were as follows:

Day 1     BSSC lost to Maribyrnong Jets 29- 66

Day 2     BSSC defeated Mater Christi College 41 – 37

Day 3     BSSC defeated Lowanna College 59 – 52

Day 4     BSSC defeated Hallam Senior College 57 – 51 (quarter-final)

BSSC lost to Loreto College Ballarat 46 – 91 (semi-final)

Day 5     BSSC lost to Yarra Valley Grammar 44 – 61 (bronze medal game)

Making the bronze medal game was quite a significant achievement, as the team consisted of only 6 players. Most other teams had at least four or more players on their bench and were able to rest players on a more frequent basis. Having fewer players did not deter the girls and they played with great energy and passion all week. In a couple of games, they trailed at ½ time and ¾ time but were still able to find the determination to finish strongly and win the game.

Congratulations to all team members: Poppy Blanch, Maddi Dobeli, Hayley Harrington, Bree Heiden, Ruby Pointon, Shardae Sharp, and coach Joe Hurst.
