High temperatures and wet weather made conditions very difficult at this year’s RACV Energy Breakthrough! Although the race started in dry conditions—with both teams in good positions—the predicted showers throughout the day and night brought slippery roads and reduced visibility.
BSSC had two teams entered. ‘1 million nuts’ was in the Open Hybrid category. This team had an up and down battle throughout the race with the engine only functioning when the track was dry. By race’s end the team was over ten laps up and, factoring in their win in Design and Construction, the team won the category overall.
Meanwhile, ‘Nothing like a bin fire’ in the Open Secondary category, and entirely reliant on pedal power, was gifted with their closest rivals receiving a 50-lap penalty for changing to the open category. They managed to stay within 50 laps of the team from Woodleigh as well as winning the Design and Construction award, and so comfortably won the category overall.
Despite the incredibly challenging conditions, it turned out to be a great Energy Breakthrough for BSSC. Both teams won both categories they entered.
“The Year 11 students are all fired up to improve, and push the quality of the vehicles further in 2018,” Design Technology teacher Daryl King said.
Congratulations to riders, pit crew, technical support, catering, staff, and all those parents who supported their young people so they could be part of this fantastic event.
