Unit 3 Biology students had the opportunity to extend their lab experience this morning when they attended the “Flu Attack: Immunity fights back” workshop at La Trobe University Bendigo. The workshop is part of La Trobe’s Outreach Programs, designed to engage VCE Science students in a hands-on way.

“Flu Attack” provides a real-life context to help VCE Biology students untangle the complex web underlying the immune response.

BSSC Science teacher, Mary Nash, said the program was a great opportunity for students to use laboratory equipment they can’t access at the college. “We can provide the theory,” she said, “but workshops like this offer the students a higher level of practical application.”

The workshop was developed in consultation with experienced teachers and researchers studying innate immune cell and T cell responses to influenza A virus in Professor Weisan Chen’s laboratory at La Trobe University.
