Complementing BSSC’s commitment to students who are just beginning to learn English, those who are already reasonably confident can enrol in the ‘B Stream’ of VPC EAL.
In Stream B, instead of an intensive focus on learning a new language, literacy becomes an avenue for acquiring wider knowledge. Students in this stream continue to build on their language skills in the classroom, but also use them in different settings—building confidence as well as connection with their Aussie peers and the wider community.
Activities like Market Day, swimming lessons, and workplace visits, mean new learning is put into context and students are also welcome to enrol in any of the VCE, VET or VM subjects they are interested in.
New connections and friendships across cultures within our college community are also nurtured in other classes. One VCE teacher asked the Aussie students in her class about the music Australians particularly love.
“The Nutbush,” was the immediate response. For most of the Karen students in the class it—and its iconic dance—was unfamiliar. The class ended with everyone getting up and doing ‘The Nutbush’ together—Karen and Aussie students as well as teachers and ES staff.
One of the aims of EAL is to make sure students continue to feel positive about their identity and to maintain cohesiveness between students. This is supported by appreciation through cultural events and also by music—western and Karen music.
