Students in the Maths Science Specialist Program were challenged to think like uni students this morning, when Dr Michael Payne and Dr Toen Castle of La Trobe University Bendigo delivered a workshop on Mathematical Proofs.

The session started with the question, “What is a proof” and proceeded to explore the different types of proofs, how to write a good proof, and the importance of understanding the mathematical terminology surrounding proofs.

BSSC Maths teacher, Mathew Gill, said the workshop was an opportunity for students to get a taste of what’s on offer at La Trobe, and meet university lecturers from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

“Proofs is one of the more challenging subject areas of mathematics,” he said. “It’s great for the students to be exposed to these ideas while they’re still at secondary college and thinking about where maths can take them.”
