Year 11 student, Jake Gilchrist, recently completed a week of Work Experience at L & A Autocare in Kangaroo Flat, where he was able to put into practice the knowledge and skills he has developed through his semester one Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation at BSSC.

Throughout the week Jake was trusted with a wide range of practical tasks that reflect the responsibilities of a first-year apprentice.

He assisted with routine vehicle servicing and oil changes, replaced drive belts and exhaust systems, and even had the opportunity to support and complete more advanced jobs such as replacing a timing chain and changing a clutch.

Diagnostic work also gave him valuable insight into how technicians identify and solve mechanical issues.

Staff described Jake as ‘enthusiastic’ and ‘willing to learn’, noting his safe work practices, effective communication, and ability to use a variety of tools and equipment correctly.

“I can definitely see myself as a mechanic in the future,” Jake reflected. “Doing Work Experience has helped me make up my mind about my career.”
