BSSC Year 12 student, Heidi Nelson, is undertaking her Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance – (Partial Completion).
Heidi enjoyed a two-day Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placement at St John of God (SJoG) Hospital recently, where she put into practice the range of skills she has learnt through her studies.
Veronica Baird—also in Year 12—is completing her VCE at BSSC and also undertook two days of work experience at SJoG, where she learnt all about the role of a nurse. The placement was a wonderful chance for Veronica to also gain a greater understanding of other caregiver roles within the hospital.
Both Heidi and Veronica completed relevant workplace health and safety training prior to their placement and used these acquired skills at the hospital.
Heidi and Veronica got to shadow various SJoG staff, including in the Rehabilitation unit where they assisted patients during treatment.
Other assigned tasks were bedding changes, Occupational Therapist observation and checking ‘Bedside Emergency’ packs—this was all on day one!
The placement confirmed to both students that this is the industry they can see themselves working in once school is finished.
“Everyone here has been so nice,” Heidi said. “All the staff are so friendly.”
Veronica felt the same.
“The nurses are really helpful and encouraging, everyone is welcoming and even the patients are lovely.”
Both students were appreciative of the opportunity and encouraged by how much they were shown throughout the hospital.
A huge thanks to the staff at SJoG for hosting our students.
