BSSC Year 12 student, Beu Dickens, recently completed Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) with Harrower Tube Bending in Eaglehawk, a local metal manufacturing, tube bending and machining business specialising in mandrel bending, machining and tube measuring.

The company produces custom components using steel, stainless steel and aluminium, with work ranging from prototyping and custom manufacturing through to precision components.

During his placement, Beu gained hands-on experience with some of the machinery used in the manufacturing process such as assisting with changing tooling on machines and programming equipment. Seeing how computer-controlled machinery is set up to accurately manufacture different components was a great opportunity.

At BSSC Beu studies VET Engineering as well as Design & Technology, making this placement ideal for understanding how skills from both areas are applied in industry.

This practical insight about the connection between design, engineering, and advanced manufacturing brought Beu new understanding about machinery and manufacturing processes as designs and specifications were turned into finished products.
