It’s been a big year in sport at Bendigo Senior, with more than 250 students competing in one or more of the 20 different sports offered during 2017—that amounts to 50 days of sport and 60 separate events.

There were plenty of success stories throughout the year. Our girls basketball team won the SSV championship and played off for the bronze medal in the Australian Schools Championships against Willetton Senior High School. Coming from 10 points down at three-quarter-time, they won by five points in an outstanding effort.

Our footballers competed in the grand final of the SSV Premier League. The three-point victory over CCB in Round 1, watched by hundreds of students from both colleges, built great momentum for the season.

Other teams that made state finals in 2017 included our boys and girls volleyball and badminton teams, our girls swimming squad, the boys soccer and table tennis teams and many of our track and field athletes.

Individual events were also well-represented. Outstanding efforts from Jake Hilson (18-20 yr 400m), Ben Powell (16 yr 400m), and Jimmy Cameron (orienteering) saw them all receive medals as state champion in their respective events.

Outside of the school’s program, there were many students who competed at national and international level, including Isaac Buckell who won bronze at the World Junior Track Cycling Championships.

The college thanks the 10 staff coaches who gave their time and expertise so generously, and the elite-level coaches from outside the college for their ongoing support of the BSSC Sport Program.
