Swimming – SSV State finals

The BSSC swim team had a very successful day at this week’s SSV Swimming Finals at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre. Cameron Jordan picked up two individual gold medals, winning the 13-20yr 100m breaststroke, and the 20yr 50m breaststroke (new record), along with a silver medal in the 16-20yr 200m individual medley. He also won gold in the 4x50m medley relay, along with Ziggy Lau, Tom Hawke, and Mitch O’Neill. Ziggy won two bronze medals in the 13-20yr 100m backstroke, and 17yr 50m backstroke. The boys 20yr 4x50m freestyle relay (Cam, Ziggy, Tom, and Kobe Henderson) narrowly missed a medal, finishing fifth. Georgia Waller (17yr 50m breaststroke) and Sophie Waller (17yr 50 butterfly) both swam very well but were unable to secure a medal.

Sandhurst Division Table tennis

The BSSC table tennis teams finished runners-up behind Girton Grammar in this week’s Sandhurst Division table-tennis competition. Girton has fielded very strong teams over the past two years in the senior division, so the standard of competition was very high. All BSSC players performed well on the day.

Girls team: Isabella Connor, Nicole Ferreira, Tatum Howlett, Taylah Collins

Boys team: Adam Cambareri, Cooper Aisbett-Wright, James Skinner, Jacob Brown

Bendigo Dragon Mile

Three BSSC students performed exceptionally well in the Bendigo Dragon Mile footrace held on Easter Sunday through the streets of Bendigo. Zahli Drummond won the Year 11/12 women’s event, with Lauren White finishing second. Taine Lang finished 3rd in the Year 11/12 men’s event. Well done to all runners.

Australian Age Swimming Championships

Cameron Jordan and Ziggy Lau competed in the Australian Age Swimming Championships in Adelaide over the holidays. Cam narrowly missed a gold medal in the 17yr 100m breaststroke, finishing second by 0.16 seconds. He also finished 5th in the 200m breaststroke. Both Cam and Ziggy swam in the medley relay. They finished 23rd in the 4 x 100m medley relay, and 13th in the 4 x 50m medley relay.

At the conclusion of the championships, Cam was selected as one of thirty of Australia’s most talented young swimmers to travel to Hungary in August to compete at the 2019 World Junior Swimming Championships. Congratulations Cam.

Australian Junior Basketball Championships

Billy Smythe and Dylan McCauley were both members of the Vic Country team which finished in 6th place in the U/18 division at the Australian Junior Basketball Championships in Townsville, QLD. The Vic Country team won 5 of their 6 round-robin matches before losing their 1/4 final to Tasmania. They then defeated QLD North to qualify for the 5th/6th play-off, where they were beaten by QLD South. Unfortunately Billy sustained an injury during the tournament and was unable to play the last few games.

Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships

Great result for BSSC student Susie Godfrey and her playing partner Hannah Hermans, who finished 4th in the U/18’s at the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships in Bunbury, WA. The girls were defeated by the eventual winners in the semi-finals. With 17 teams competing from throughout Australia, this was a fantastic achievement.

Netball Girls Make Interleague Squad

Congratulations to Kayla Ashcroft, Abbey Grindal, and Arriah Keogh who have all been selected in the Bendigo Football Netball League 17 & under netball squad. The girls are all members of the Specialist Sport netball program at BSSC.
