Defence careers were in the spotlight today when Petty Officer Michelle Collins from the Australian Navy and Aircraft Technician, Michael Carocci, of the Australian Air Force visited BSSC for an informative session.

More than 30 students heard about the huge range of opportunities (260 job roles) available across the Army, Navy and Air Force; the entry prerequisites and methods; and the lifestyle benefits that come with being a Defence Force employee.

Michelle shared experiences from her 19-year career in the navy working in Hospitality, Logistics and Support, including deployments to places as diverse as the Persian Gulf, Hawaii and Darwin.

“Careers in Defence can give you skills and knowledge for life,” she said.

Michael told students how he left school 14 years ago with no real career pathway in mind, but an interest in aviation.

“The Air Force has provided me with unique experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise,” he said. “The great thing about a career in Defence is that you can progress in any direction as you develop as a person, or your interests and ambitions change.

“There are endless opportunities if you’re driven and willing to go for it.”
