Today, the 11th of February, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It is a day adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the full and equal access and participation of women and girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the global effort to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in STEM. Yesterday the BSSC community celebrated with a luncheon.
Teaching and Learning Coordinator of Maths and Science, Kait Kelly, organised the event to bring all BSSC’s female STEM students and staff—and those that support them—together to acknowledge, empower and encourage all girls and women studying and working in this field.
“It is up to all of us to help close the gender gap by breaking stereotypes, supporting women’s advancement, fostering inclusive environments and promoting role models,” says Kait.
“I am immensely proud to work here at Bendigo Senior, where our college does exactly that.”
The luncheon offered a wonderful chance to celebrate the wealth of knowledge and experience held by BSSC’s STEM staff and also the opportunity to show the next generation of STEM superstars that they will always be supported and nurtured to continue exploring all things science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“The inclusivity of our STEM classrooms, the support and encouragement from teachers and colleagues and our extraordinary women who are teachers and education support staff in STEM ensure that every young person, but particularly every woman studying STEM has the opportunity to flourish.”
Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
