Studio Art  Painting and Drawing, Ceramics, and Photography Course Outline Unit 3 and4

Unit 3: Studio production & professional practices
The focus of this unit is the implementation of the design process leading to the production of a range of solutions. Students use a work brief to define an area of exploration and apply a design process to explore and develop their ideas.
Artists in their professional development often determine their own artistic goals in order to further develop their technical skills and perceptual and conceptual facilities. In their professional practice they are often required to work within the parameters described in a work brief determined by clients, patrons and sponsors. In both professional development and practice an area of investigation is defined and processes employed to develop solutions. Students will research developments in a particular studio form and investigate traditional and contemporary practices of artists.
Artists from different times and locations have developed new ideas, materials and techniques and have constantly sought higher levels of achievement. They have responded to a wide range of stimuli in novel and innovative ways and have developed new aesthetic values and qualities. Artists have used this rich heritage to inform their practice and establish contemporary agendas for their particular art form.

AREAS OF STUDY

1. Design process
This area of study focuses on defining and determining the parameters and framework for an area of exploration and the development of art works through the application of a design process and the use of a work brief. The art works will be completed in Unit 4.
This area of study will include:
  • development of a work brief
  • definition and documentation of an area of exploration
  • exploration and development of individual and creative responses to the ideas in the work brief
  • identification and investigation of sources of inspiration
  • conceptual and aesthetic development of subject matter materials and techniques appropriate to the area of exploration
  • documentation of the process of making informed choices during the design process, based on reflection, analysis, evaluation and selection
  • methods of organising and planning the development of art works
  • methods of developing a range of creative solutions.
2. Professional practices
This area of study focuses on traditional and contemporary practices of artists in particular art forms together with the ways in which artists develop distinctive styles and approaches to subject matter.

This area of study will include:
  • the ways in which artists interpret artistic influences, cultural contexts and ideas in order to develop distinctive styles and approaches to subject matter
  • the ways in which changing materials and techniques have affected artistic practices
  • traditional and contemporary work environments and their affect on artists' professional practice
  • the ways in which new and emerging media technologies are influencingselected art form(s) and practice(s)

OUTCOMES

For this unit students are required to demonstrate achievement of two outcomes. As a set these outcomes encompass both areas of study for the unit.

Outcome 1
On completion of this unit the student should be able to present a design process which defines an area of exploration in a work brief, explores and develops the ideas described in the work brief and produces a range of potential solutions.

Key knowledge
In achieving this outcome the student will draw on knowledge described in area of study 1.
To achieve this outcome the student should demonstrate knowledge of
  • the use of a work brief
  • an area of exploration
  • sources of inspiration
  • ways of responding individually and creatively to the ideas in the work brief
  • methods of exploring and developing the ideas in the work brief
  • conceptual and aesthetic development of the subject matter
  • materials and techniques appropriate to the area of exploration
  • the process of making informed choices through reflecting, analysing and evaluating developmental work
  • methods of organising and planning the development of art works
  • methods of developing a range of creative solutions

Key skills

To achieve this outcome the student should demonstrate the ability to
  • use a work brief
  • define and document an area of exploration
  • identify and investigate sources of inspiration
  • respond individually and creatively to the ideas in the work brief
  • explore and develop the ideas in the work brief
  • develop subject matter conceptually and aesthetically
  • explore materials, develop and apply techniques
  • document reflections, analysis and evaluation of the developmental work
  • select appropriate aspects of the exploration to develop art works
  • organise and plan the development of art works
  • develop a range of creative potential solutions to the requirements of the work brief.

Outcome 2
On completion of this unit students should be able to examine and discuss traditional and contemporary working practices in relation to a particular art form(s) and the ways in which artists interpret artistic influences, cultural contexts and ideas in developing distinctive styles and approaches to subject matter.

Key knowledge
In achieving this outcome the student will draw on knowledge described in area of study 2.

To achieve this outcome the student should demonstrate knowledge of
  • the ways in which artists interpret artistic influences, cultural contexts and ideas in order to develop distinctive styles and approaches to subject matter
  • the ways in which changing materials and techniques have affected artistic practices
  • traditional and contemporary work environments and their affect on artists' professional practice
  • the ways in which new and emerging media technologies are influencing selected art form(s) and practice(s)
Key skills
To achieve this outcome the student should demonstrate the ability to
  • discuss how artists have developed distinctive styles and approaches to subject matter
  • examine the ways in which materials and techniques have affected traditional and contemporary practices
  • research and compare traditional and contemporary practices related to the selected art form
  • identify and discuss the influence of new and emerging technologies on a selected artform(s)

Unit 4: Studio production & industry contexts

The focus of this unit is to produce a cohesive folio of finished art works and to gain an understanding of artists' involvement in the art industry

Areas of study

1. Studio production
This area of study focus on the production of a cohesive folio of art works, which has developed from  a design process and which resolves the aim and intentions set out in the work brief formulation in unit 3.
This area will include:
  • refining and applying materials and techniques and utilising their particular characteristics
  • the exploration and refinement of visual form in order to communicate ideas
  • communication and resolution of the ideas presented in the work brief
  • the production of a cohesive folio of art works
  • methods of presenting art works appropriate to the art form.

2. Art industry contexts
The process of taking a finished art work out of the studio and into the public view involves artists in an extensive industry of art. This unit focus on the different components of the arts industry of art. This unit focuses on the different components of the arts industry, their influences on artists and their work issues relating to the public display, promotion and critique of art works.
This area will include:
  • the roles of public galleries, commercial galleries and other art spaces;
  • the approaches, methods and resolves related to curatorship, exhibition design and conservation in preserving and presenting artists' work;
  • current issues that arise from the promotion and marketing, public perception and industry recognition of art;
  • ethical considerations and regulations that effect the use of other artists in the making of new art works.
