Introduction
Art is about the making and analysis of art works and their role in society. There is an equal balance (50/50) between practical and research work across the art study design. You will learn about the relationship which exists between artists, art works and culture. Knowledge that is gained throughout the course will be reflected through individual art productions. Theory work involves researching and writing about common concerns and issues of artists. Art can be studied in one of three foci, depending on your own interests or career path:

 
VCE Art
Art introduction and Course outline
This subject has been designed to encourage artistic development through personal and independent exploration. It emphasises innovative thinking and investigation and the ability to progressively develop ideas and personal concepts and skills. This involves the production of visual solutions in the folio using a variety of techniques, materials and processes. Students must document their thinking and working practices. The theory of art is explored through critical study of artists and students are expected to develop the ability to interpret, discuss, write and debate the ideas and issues which art raises.

Bendigo Senior Secondary College offers three foci in the art forms of art fashion, drawing and general. At Bendigo Senior Secondary College students are able to specialize for two year in the one discipline. Utilizing the excellent facilities in an adult environment under the guidance of staff who are expert in the art forms that they teach and have a wide knowledge and technical skills.

Structure
The study is made up of four units: Each unit is detailed with specific content and is designed to enable students to achieve a set of outcomes.

BSSC Media
Media has a significant impact on people's lives. It influences the way people spend their time, helps shape the way they perceive themselves and others, and plays a crucial role in the creation of personal, social, cultural and national identity. A study of the media involves learning practical, analytical and critical skills in relation to all forms of Australian mass media.
Two Media Pathways are included in the program guide on pages 107 and 108: Other links: Although it is not a prerequisite, we recommend students complete Units 1&2 Media before selecting Units 3&4.

Music Styles
Music Styles is an excellent companion to Music Performance. Students interested in tertiary music studies are advised to enrol in both music subjects.
  • This course will be of interest to any student wishing to take on a musical career, as well as to students who wish to learn more about music in general, composers, particular eras in history, sociocultural connections, etc.
  • All units in Music Styles require essay and report writing, arranging and aural and visual tests based upon class discussion and research. The college library has an excellent music reference section.

Music Performance
  • If you are considering Music Performance it is recommended you have at least three years' tuition and experience, Grade 4 AMEB or ANZCA (B or above) before enrolling in Unit 1. Please arrange to speak with the Music Coordinator before enrolling.
  • You must continue lessons on your solo instrument.

Studio Arts
Studio Arts is about the development and use of specialist skills in the production of art works. Each unit consists of 70% studio production and 30% theory. Studying artists is an important component, forming the basis of both practical and written work. You will learn the methods and techniques of practising artists. These will then form the basis of your own studio practices.

You can study one of four foci depending upon your interests or career path:

Theatre Studies
Theatre Studies focuses on the knowledge and use of stagecraft and equipment including sets, lighting, a stage managers role, costume, make-up and publicity. The study covers all areas of stage production. You will also study the role of actors. Some performance work is necessary to understand fully the relationship between actors and stagecraft.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) Programs
The following Vocational Education courses are offered in The Arts:

VET Dance
VET Dance allows you to select a style of dance and explore its practical and theoretical aspects with a view to developing a total performance. If you are considering VET Dance, you should have previous experience in a dance style and you must be prepared to continue with private tuition.

Drama
Drama is about performance. You will develop your expressive skills and gain the ability and confidence to perform a range of roles. You will study the practical and theoretical aspects of styles of acting, and examine the relationship between specific societies and their theatres.

Visual Communication and Design
Visual Communication and Design (formally known as Graphics) is about drawing, designing and communicating. Both units consist of practical applications and written research (40% theory, 60% practical). Written work during the course includes research into Visual Communication professionals as well as a study of period styles. Practical work is equally balanced between creative and conventional graphics. You can study one of two foci depending on your interests or career path:
