The study of Chemistry allows you to relate many chemical concepts to everyday phenomena while providing a strong base for further studies in the sciences.

Unit 1

SCCH1

Unit 2

SCCH2
Materials
This unit focuses on the properties of useful materials. The chemical nature of materials is explored through an investigation of properties and their modification.

Areas studied

  • Introduction to materials
  • Water
  • Chemistry of surfaces
    Chemistry in Everyday Life
This unit examines a wide range of chemical reactions and associated calculations. An emphasis is placed on the environmental impact of human activity on the biosphere.

Areas studied

  • Acids in the environment
  • The atmosphere
  • Corrosion of metal

Unit 3

SCCH3

&

Unit 4

SCCH4
Chemistry and the Market Place
This unit takes a global perspective on examining the large-scale production of selected chemicals. The work of analytical chemists in these processes is investigated.

Areas studied

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Equilibrium
  • Industrial Chemistry
    Energy and Matter
This unit examines the relationship between the production, and the use, of energy in non-living and living systems.

Areas studied

  • Supplying and using energy
  • Food chemistry
  • The Periodic Table
Assessment: Assessment in Chemistry is a 1 1/2 hour written examination in June (33%), Unit 3&4 school assessed course work (34%) and a 1 1/2 hour written examination in November (33%).
