Biology is the study of living organisms, of life processes, and of different levels of organisation from the cell to the biosphere.

Unit 1

SCBI1

Unit 2

SCBI2
Organisms in their Environments
This unit examines communities of living organisms and their interaction with their non-living surroundings. An excursion to investigate a marine ecosystem will occur early in the unit.

Areas studied

  • Ecosystems and changes within them
  • Classification of organisms
  • Energy flow and cycling of matter
  • Adaptations of organisms
  • Experimental investigations
    Functioning Organisms
This unit examines the characteristics which assist plants and animals to function effectively in their particular environments. An excursion to the Melbourne Zoo will occur in this unit.

Areas studied

  • Provision of energy and nutrients
  • Transport of materials
  • Removal of wastes
  • Reproduction and development
  • Use of modern technologies in reproductive processes
  • Experimental investigations

Unit 3

SCBI3

&

Unit 4

SCBI4
Challenge to Survival
This unit examines the challenges to survival and how organisms overcome these challenges in their environments.

Areas studied

  • Cells in their environments
  • Structure and function of cells
  • Experimental methods used to investigate cells
  • Surviving under changing conditions
  • Use of technology to influence growth
  • Surviving challenges from pathogens
    Biological Continuity & Change
This area of study examines genetic variation, population genetics, natural selection, evolution and diversity.

Areas studied

  • Patterns of genetic inheritance
  • Genetic technology
  • Applications of gene manipulation
  • Mechanisms and processes of evolution
  • Experimental investigations
Assessment: Assessment in Biology involves a 1 1/2 hour written examination in June (33%), school assessed course work (34%) and a 1 1/2 hour written examination in November (33%).
