Introduces students to an understanding of physical activity, including the relationship between body systems, analysis of physical performance and influences on involvement in physical activity.

The Nature of Physical Activity
This unit looks at the workings of the body and how this relates to exercise, reasons for getting involved in physical activity and the benefits.

  • The circulatory system
  • Community attitudes towards physical activity
  • Health benefits and risks in sport, fitness and recreation activities
    Improving Physical Activity
This unit looks at how we learn skills used in physical activity. It also covers the technique of how sports are played and the role of technology in improvements in performance.

  • Classification of physical skills
  • Learning a physical skill
  • Characteristics of skilled performance
  • Biomechanical principles
  • Technology advances in equipment and design.

The Physiology of Fitness
This unit explores the energy systems and components and assessment of fitness.

  • Muscle groups and microscopic structure
  • Role of muscles in movement
  • Energy systems - aerobic and anaerobic
  • Assessment of fitness
  • Oxygen delivery
  • Fatigue and recovery
  • Fitness training principles and methods
    Participation & Performance
This unit examines the factors that influence an individual's initial and life-long involvement in physical activity.

Areas studied

  • Patterns of participation
  • Motivational influences
  • Influences on initial and continual involvement in physical activity
  • Sports coaching skills
  • Limits to performance
Assessment: Assessment in Physical Education 3 & 4 comprises 25% school assessed coursework in Unit 3, 25 % school assessed coursework in Unit 4, and a two hour end of year examination worth 50%.
