The world's atmosphere reaches to more than 100 kilometres above the surface of the Earth. The atmosphere is a mixture of gases. In addition, air contains tiny solid and liquid particles such as dust, sea salt, volcanic ash and meteorite dust from space. Air has weight and exerts pressure on the Earth's surface. There is about 10 tonnes of air above every square metre of the Earth's surface. The air becomes less dense and exerts less pressure high in the atmosphere. The temperature of the atmosphere varies with altitude. |
