	The air is a mixture of gases; some of them are essential to our survival. Oxygen is required for respiration by both plants and animals. Carbon dioxide is required for photosynthesis. The nitrogen gas in the air is converted to nitrogen compounds that are needed by all plants and animals by nitrogen fixing bacteria.
