A complex series of intertwining short and long term causes led to the Russian Revolution of 1917. A series of tensions were generated which Nicholas and his government were unwilling or unable to respond to effectively.

He loved his country . He had its welfare and greatness at heart. Yet it was he
who was to cause the catastrophe which brought it to utter ruin and misery.
