About the Program

Bendigo Senior Secondary College is participating in the Sustainable Schools Program, an initiative of the Gould League and CERES Environmental Park. The program provides Professional Development and customised consultancy to assist us to develop operational practices integrated with a sustainable curriculum.

The Program offers a holistic education program on sustainability for schools. It consists of a core module 'Becoming a Sustainable School' and four optional modules that aim to decrease waste and litter produced by the school, reduce the energy consumption of the school, reduce water consumption of the school and to increase biodiversity in the grounds.

During 2004 BSSC will focus on reducing the energy consumption of the school but we will also attempt to make some progress in reducing litter and waste production at BSSC.

"Becoming a Sustainable School" - Current Progress

  • We have collected baseline data on energy use at BSSC. The Audit Report was prepared by iComply Pty Ltd Wheelers Hill in November 2003. See Summary Report.
  • We have formed a Sustainable Schools Program Team
  • Staff Professional Development:
    1. Facilitated by consultant Glenn Davidson - August 2003.
    2. Facilitated by staff members of the BSSC Professional Development Sustainable Schools Team - December 2003 - see PowerPoint.
  • We have collated ideas from Learning Areas on how BSSC can conserve energy, reduce litter and waste production, reduce water consumption and increase biodiversity in the college grounds.
  • We have completed a curriculum audit
  • We have set goals and targets for operations, enriched curriculum and whole school engagement.
