Instructions in the lead up to the day:

  1. Schools are encouraged to prepare for the day by “dressing up “as miners.
  2. If time permits it would be great if schools could prepare banners such as the diggers flag (see this web site for pictures) or drape themselves in red ribbon (supplied upon request from Alan Boddy (Education Officer 040852031).
  3. Please read the script on this web site that Bendigo Historical Society volunteers will be acting out.

Instructions for the day:

  1. Schools are expected to marshall students between 9:30am and 9:50am on Thursday 2nd September for a 10:00am sharp start to the march.
  2. Bus drop off points will be the Tom Flood Sports Centre. Students should then walk down Park Road to Howard Place to be marshalled. The marshals will be wearing red ribbon on their sleeves.
  3. Signs will alert schools to their allocated starting position in Howard Place. Schools will be placed in alphabetical order-primary schools followed by secondary schools.
  4. When instructed, students are to march along Pall Mall. The cue will be “Diggers are you ready to march?”
  5. Proceed along Pall Mall and up View Street. Students will be encouraged to yell “No more license fees!!”
  6. Stop outside the Bendigo Art Gallery Amphitheatre. Marchers will hear a few more protest speeches at this monster meeting.
  7. Proceed up the laneway (between Trades Hall and Gallery) and up and onwards to the Poppet head in Rosalind Park. Students will witness the miners’ representation to ‘Commissioner Panton’.
  8. After this ceremony, schools that have requested the follow up activities will be requested to stay put, and schools only participating in the march will be asked to disperse as quickly as practicable.
