Ash Bird – BSSC Music Coordinator
What are the biggest challenges for you teaching from home?
Everything, from altering curriculum, trialling online teaching practices and maintaining student engagement. Also, having a student teacher has been a different experience under the current circumstances. Possibly the biggest challenge has been conducting instrumental lessons via Google Meet as they are highly practical lessons and there are sound issues which can create confusion.
What do you like about teaching from home? What has surprised you?
Not having to go anywhere was nice initially, but if I had the choice, I would prefer to be teaching at school.
Have you got a favourite place at home to work?
I’ve set up a workstation in the corner of my lounge room.
Any funny, unexpected things that have happened as a result of teaching from home?
Often when conducting a one-to-one lesson, students will secretly forward the link to friends who will randomly appear in the Google Meet session.
What do you miss most about physically going to school?
I miss the face to face time with students and colleagues.
Anything you’d like to say to the rest of the BSSC community during lockdown?
Hang in there! We’re all in this together.
