Honorary Life Members

FLORENCE Jean ANDERSON 1995

Old Gold presented Miss Florence Anderson, 90 years old, the Association’s first Honorary Life Membership on 18th November, 1995, at Mirridong Nursing Home. Old Gold representatives were Lyndon Langan (Chairman of Old Gold), Ron Lake (Current Principal) and Kaye Trimble (Executive Committee Member Old Gold).

Miss Anderson was a student at Bendigo High School from 1917-1921(transferring from Eaglehawk State School to Form 1 in 1916, upper floor of Camp Hill State School then to the new Bendigo High School in 1917). She was a Staff Member at BHS from 1934-1959 and became Senior Mistress 1959-1970 when she retired.

From The School on the Hill: Miss Anderson’s greatest love was for Bendigo High School and its scholars and she worked untiringly, with enthusiasm and human warmth, for the betterment of all, maintaining what was of value yet always prepared to meet the new challenges of the times with an open mind and great wisdom.

Florence Anderson’s contribution to Bendigo High School was extraordinary and her influence on generations of students was far reaching. She passed away on 24th February, 1999, aged 94.

As part of the college’s Centenary celebrations in October 2007 – the 1930 Administration Building, under the James King Hall, was named the Florence Anderson Building.


Norma JEAN CAPUANO 2007

Old Gold presented Jean Capuano with Honorary Life Membership on 12th September 2007.  Bendigo Senior Secondary College and Old Gold held a small gathering in the Staff Centre to recognize Jean Capuano’s contribution to the college as Researcher, Archivist, Data compiler and organisation of the Old Gold Association including the Annual 40 Year Reunions.

Three very significant tasks which were undertaken of Jean’s own initiative are:
1. The computerization of all student records, from 1907 onwards.  Jean entered approx. 19,500 records from 1907 to 1990 (until they were computerized)

2. The Record of Staff Service (released at the 95th Reunion in 2002).
This was compiled by Jean going through all past Old Gold magazines, Awards programs etc. (approx. 1,250 records).

3. The World War 2 electronic Honour Board, based on information listed in Old Gold magazines.  Jean verified records with the Australian War Memorial Honour Roll  (approx. 306 records).

Russell GEOFFREY PAYNTER 2008

 
Old Gold presented Geoff Paynter with Honorary Life Membership at the Old Gold Bendigo Inc. 10th Annual Dinner & General Meeting held on 31st May, 2008, at Medora’s Restaurant, Kangaroo Flat.

Geoff is a Foundation Member of the Association and was President for 14 years. Incoming President, Tony Conolan, presented the membership on behalf of the Committee and Members for his many contributions during this time. Some of the projects Geoff has been actively involved in are:
  • The remaking of the House banners
  • The production of note paper for the 90th Reunion
  • The production of the cover for the Old Gold Newsletter
  • The creation of the History trail
  • The Centenary Art Exhibition
  • The Centenary Official Celebrations
Three generations of the Paynter family have attended Bendigo High School. Geoff’s father Reg, was a student 1915-1916, and later returned as a teacher from 1967-1971. Geoff was a student from 1951-1956 and a prefect. Geoff and Ruth’s children also attended the school.

Old Gold President, Tony Conolan,  presented Ron Lake and Faye Frewin with Honorary Life Memberships at the Old Gold Bendigo Inc. Annual Dinner & General Meeting held on 22nd May 2010 at Medora's Restaurant, Bendigo Motor Inn, Kangaroo Flat, on behalf of the Committee and Members.

RON LAKE - Teacher 1970-1971 1973-1978 - Principal 1989-2001

In recognition of his outstanding leadership to Bendigo Senior Secondary College as Principal.  Ron was instrumental in the formation of Old Gold Bendigo Inc. in 1995.
E Block was named the Ron Lake Building during the Centenary Celebrations.

FAYE FREWIN - Student 1957

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to Old Gold Bendigo Inc. as a foundation member.  Faye was Treasurer from 1995-2004 and Secretary from 2004-2009.
