Ecumenical Church Service - James King Hall
This moving service provided many participants with memories of school assemblies and other events that had been held in this
venue, which is an integral part of the school's history.
The service commenced with the Centenary Chorus singing "Jerusalem" and "O God our help in ages past" while people were
gathering in the hall. Assistant Principal David Casltes was organist.
Current student Nathan Wingrave then led the procession of participating clergy to the front of the hall. The Worship Leader Rev.
Doug Turnbull (student 1956 - 1960) welcomed everybody and opened the service. The rousing singing of "Now thank we all our God"
was one of the highlights as the Centenary Chorus, directed by Val Broad and accompanied by organ and brass instruments, led the congregation.
The bible readers were Katherine Dobson and Kody Thompson, both current students. The Madrigal Groups were part of the musical
scene at the school for many years, particularly while Edmund Beilharz was the music teacher. An enthusiastic group of former
Madrigals provided stunning renditions of "Ave Verum" and "Lord for thy tender mercies' sake" following the readings.
The Rev. Professor Denham Grierson (student 1949 - 1953) was the preacher for the occasion and Denham reflected on the
significant role that the school has played over the past 100 years.
Rev. Canon Dick Pidgeon (student 1938 - 1943) led the congregation in the Affirmation:
'Throughout history teachers have played a role more profound and subtle
than that of instruction alone. Bringing to their vocation a passion for ideas
and values, together with a love for students and an understanding of the process by which the seeds of motivation are planted, the profession has
inspired millions of people to become everything from community activists
to loving parents; from distinguished professionals to valued leaders in every aspect of a society's life.'
So it has been in the life of Bendigo High School and Bendigo Senior Secondary College over 100 years.
This day we acknowledge all those who have been teachers and staff in this
place and honour their life and work.
We give thanks for their influence and the gift of teaching in every generation.

Assistant Principal David Castles then led the Prayers of the people. The service concluded with another rousing hymn -
"Guide me O thou great Jehovah". Rev Doug Turnbull pronounced the benediction, which was followed by the singing of the School Song.
